There are a number of websites operating in Australia that are dedicated to assisting families with finding funeral directors. These range from funeral broker websites to true funeral comparison websites, like Gathered Here.

As with most services you can find online, they range in quality and functionality. Navigating them and all their differences can almost be as difficult and time consuming as working your way through all the funeral directors in your area one by one.

In this article, we take a look at 5 different websites consumers can use.

Platinum Funeral Advisory Service (www.pfas.net.au)

Platinum Funeral Advisory Service is a company that provides advice for families seeking to plan a funeral. They have commercial arrangements with a handful of funeral homes around Australia, known as their “Platinum Partners”.

Making an enquiry for a funeral home at Platinum Funeral Advisory Service will result in you being referred to one of their partners.

Funeral Planner (www.funeralplanner.com.au)

Funeral Planner is a funeral home comparison website operated by InvoCare. If you’re arranging a funeral and you haven’t heard about InvoCare, you should read our article on the InvoCare funeral brands. There are certain advantages and disadvantages to having a funeral managed by a giant corporation that operates 40% of the funeral homes in Australia.

The important thing you need to realise when using this website is that you will only see options for InvoCare-owned funeral homes. Unfortunately, this isn’t clear from the website which could easily lead consumers to believe they are conducting a fair and independent comparison of the market, rather than seeing results that are all from the same company.

Prices are not itemised and you need to speak to a sales consultant to get individual prices.

Compare Funerals (www.comparefunerals.com.au)

Compare Funerals are funeral brokers. On their website, customers are able to complete a fairly complex form detailing their requirements, after which they are asked to sign a contract appointing Compare Funerals as their funeral broker.

Presumably, Compare Funerals will then arrange a funeral director to meet with you in person, however, when we tested the website, after signing the contract no one got in touch with us, and no one answered our calls.

Funeral Zone (www.funeralzone.com.au)

Funeral Zone allows website visitors to search for funeral homes in their area. While the website is clean and well designed, the funeral director listings do not contain much more information than a picture of the shopfront and the address of the business.

The main draw card would appear to be the 200+ customer reviews they claim to have on their homepage, but upon a closer look there appear to be only a small number of funeral home listings that have customer reviews.

Gathered Here (www.gatheredhere.com.au)

Gathered Here is a funeral comparison website that allows families to instantly compare the prices and reviews of over 600 funeral homes around Australia.

Unlike the other websites described in this article, Gathered Here provides information on all funeral directors in the market, and not just those who pay them. Gathered Here believe that consumers should be able to assess the entire market with complete transparency.

Families can also complete a Request Quotes Form, and receive quotes from up to 3 funeral directors in their area. This service is free for consumers and there is no obligation to proceed with any quotes.
